The View From Granada Issue 4 Volume 1
The View From Denver
by Caroline Lavelle
May5th, 2007.

I'm sitting in a hotel room in Denver on the morning of the concert in Boulder.  Yesterday when we arrived I felt a bit woozy and was told it was because we were a mile high here; I live a lot nearer sea-level!  The first thing I always do when I arrive in my room or wake in the morning is call David my husband.  We only got married in June last year, so it is really difficult to be apart for such long periods of time, and I miss him terribly.  I never thought I'd want to get married, and still have to pinch myself to believe my good luck; he is the most special person.  He is a veterinary surgeon in the UK and I am doing a degree in canine behaviour, and we often chat about his cases which really brings me home for a few minutes.  I also miss our dogs - three greyhounds and David's new rescue lurcher dog who I haven't met yet as David only got him this week.

On the subject of greyhounds, I was reading a book called 'The Reign of the Greyhound' by Cynthia Branigan, which is a history of that lovely breed, and everything that Loreena mentions during the concerts seems to be paralleled in the book; so much so it is almost uncanny.  The greyhound was known as the dog of the Celts, and they were most highly prized in Greece, being the first dog mentioned in literature in, you guessed it, Homer's Odyssey, they were apparently brought from Asia minor to the west by the spread of the Celts, being mentioned by Dante (see what I mean...!) and Shakespeare, ending up in Ireland where they were saved by the monks there, becoming almost an obsession with the Irish.  Although I have loved greyhounds for a long time, believing them to be the most affectionate and beautiful creatures, I didn't yet know their history and so it was a surprise; I think that maybe we should have a resident greyhound on tour with us now - there are plenty needing homes!

Traveling through Europe and North America is a privilege, however homesick I feel, and I have loved meeting the warm and kind people that have come to the shows.  Certain places come to mind, like the day we played in Boston when the local baseball team won and the first sunny day happened for a long time; the atmosphere was lovely, made even more special by the most spectacular hall - I though the roof would fly off at the end of the concert.  I also remember in Florence coming around the corner and being slapped in the eye by the Duomo.  Such beauty.  There, I met up with a good friend who a couple of years ago moved from London to Tuscany, an engineer who has also worked on Loreena's music, Bella Rodriguez.  It's so great being able to catch up with people you can normally only talk to on the telephone or email.  I hope to meet more of you and also hope that those coming to the shows will enjoy themselves as much as the audiences so far have seemed to.
